Legend has it that Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was influenced by the Centre Pompidou when creating the Air Max 1. The Paris landmark—which famously has all of its plumbing, air ducts, and wiring on the building’s exterior—inspired Hatfield to expose the Air unit on the groundbreaking sneaker, an element that has been commemorated in the ‘Centre Pompidou by Day’ edition of the 1987 original. The suede and leather upper is lined with red, yellow, and green details that bring to mind the external piping of the original structure, while a multicolored pattern and ‘P’ logo cover the translucent sole.
